Individuals can obtain medical assistant training at many medical assistant schools in Kansas City and the surrounding areas. Coursework for medical assistants generally includes training in lab techniques, clinical procedures, medical terminology, and medical office procedures. Medical assistants also need excellent interpersonal skills.
Medical assistants perform a variety of tasks in the doctor’s office. In the front office, they may maintain medical records, greet patients, answer phones, and perform other duties as required. They also may perform intake tasks with patients, accompany them to exam rooms, and perhaps perform medical tasks such as taking blood-pressure readings and drawing blood for testing. Like doctors and nurses, medical assistants can specialize, or they can work mostly in general practice offices. Medical assistants usually work under the supervision of medical office managers, registered nurses, nurse-practitioners, or physicians. Most medical assistants work in doctor’s offices, urgent care facilities, and ambulatory care centers. More and more, medical assistants are working in public and private hospitals and clinics.
Medical Assisting Jobs in Kansas City
The job market for medical assistants is very strong in Kansas City due to a shortage of registered nurses. Medical assistants fill in the gaps both in the front office and in direct patient care. The average salary for medical assistants in Missouri is $27,080 per year. (Figures courtesy of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Employment & Wages database.)
Although certification isn’t required in Kansas City, many employers prefer to hire certified medical assistants. There are two certifications available for medical assistants: The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification from the American Medical Technologists (AMT). To obtain the AAMA certification, individuals must take an exam. Prior to taking this exam, individuals must successfully complete medical assistant courses that are approved by the Allied Health Education Programs’ Commission on Accreditation or the Health Education School’s Accrediting Bureau. Individuals seeking an RMA certification either must successfully complete the same coursework, or must have five years of experience as a medical assistant prior to certification.
