The employment outlook for medical assistants is excellent. Pay ranges from over $25,000 to $45,000 per year depending on the geographic location, work setting and years of experience. The training for medical assistants consists of one to two years beyond high school; however some medical assistants get on the job training after taking positions such as receptionists in physicians’ offices. Training can be obtained through high school vocational programs, community colleges, junior, colleges, and technical schools and through some online programs. Certificate programs usually take about one year to complete and associate degrees take two years. Medical assistants take courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, transcription, laboratory techniques, and insurance processing. Medical assistants need good communication skills and the ability to make a good first impression since they deal directly with patients and clients.
