Medical Assistant Degree Programs

Medical assistant degree programs teach the skills needed to join the field of medical assisting. Today, the most employable medical assistants are those with a formal medical assistant degree from an accredited school.

The most common type of medical assistant degree is the associate’s degree. Medical assistant certificates and diplomas are also popular options, though their level of education is not as high as that of a medical assistant degree at the associate’s level.

Associate’s Degrees in Medical Assisting

Associate’s degrees in medical assisting are generally offered through trade and vocational schools or through junior and community colleges, and some universities. Associate’s degree programs can usually be completed within about two years.

Medical assisting associate’s degrees are designed to provide practical training in medical assisting, including background medical knowledge, hands-on clinical skills, and foundation knowledge in general education topics. Core courses are geared toward basic medical assistant job functions.

Medical assistant degree programs usually include an externship to give students hands-on experience working as a medical assistant in a live clinical setting.

Choosing the Right Medical Assistant Degree Program

While exploring programs, there are a few factors students are generally advised to be aware of. The most significant factor is accreditation.

Medical assistant degree programs are normally accredited through a known regulatory organization such as the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accreditation Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Graduating from an accredited degree program allows greater career potential in many aspects, including the ability to gain certification. During initial research, be sure to inquire about a program’s accreditation.

Other factors to think about are:

Getting and comparing information on at least 2-3 degree programs is a good approach for students to take.
