Medical Assistant Diploma Programs
A diploma in medical assisting is a quick, relatively affordable education option for students seeking to become entry-level medical assistants.
Compared to associate’s degree programs, diploma programs are shorter, taking from several months to a year to complete. This shorter time frame also makes them more affordable, requiring fewer classes and fewer materials. Diploma programs are a popular option for students who have no prior college education.
Medical Assistant Diploma Curriculum
Diploma programs in medical assisting cover the essential course subjects necessary for entry-level work as a medical assistant. This includes foundation-level medical courses and patient care basics, both lecture-based and hands-on.
Lecture-based courses usually take place in a standard classroom or in a lecture hall. Hands-on classes may take place in a medical lab equipped with medical tools, and sometimes in a simulated clinical environment where students wear scrubs and use full, standard medical equipment.
Course subjects studied during a medical assistant diploma program might include:
- Medical Terminology
- Medical Law and Ethics
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Pharmacology
- Patient Care Techniques
For example, the six-month online medical assistant diploma program at Ashworth College covers medical office safety, insurance processing, communication, medical records management, and various topics around interacting with patients.
Where to Find Medical Assisting Diploma Programs
Diplomas in medical assisting are offered by many types of medical assistant school, including career colleges, universities, community colleges, and other postsecondary schools. Some programs may be offered online, either as an extension of a campus-based medical assistant school, or as an entire online school. Other programs may be offered as mail-based correspondence courses.
Benefits of Diplomas
There are a few advantages of enrolling in a medical assistant diploma program versus other types of credential.
- Time Frame – The largest benefit of a diploma program is its shorter time frame compared to degree programs. Whereas an associate’s degree in medical assisting usually takes around two years to complete, a diploma can usually be completed in a year or less.
- Cost – Because of its shorter time frame and smaller number of classes, diploma programs usually cost significantly less than associate’s degree programs. The cost is typically estimated to be about half.
- Prior Education – Unlike certificate programs, diplomas do not require students to have any prior college education. These programs normally provide just enough foundation courses to provide a solid, entry-level education.
Applying to a Diploma Program
Most medical assistant schools offering diploma programs allow prospective students to apply online using a general application form. Students provide relevant personal information as well as information on prior education, employment history, and other details. Some schools ask for additional documents, such as a personal essay or a letter of recommendation to give a personal aspect to the application.
Other required documents may include:
- High school transcripts
- Relevant test scores
- Resume or CV
Before applying, however, students are generally encouraged to research the schools they are interested in. This can be done by requesting information from the school regarding program details and enrollment requirements, as well as by reading review sites such as StudentsReview. It is a good idea to compare details from at least two to three schools before selecting one to commit to.
